The environment in which most organisations find themselves and the capabilities needed for leadership have changed but the methods used to develop leaders has not.

Today’s work environment is more complex, uncertain and volatile.

The capabilities needed for leadership in today’s challenging environment have also changed.

But the methods used to develop leaders have often not changed – development of leaders is often through experience on-job, by coaching of the supervisor or by theory-based “vanilla” leadership development programs.

Leadership development is too often still focused on the individual rather than recognising the need for leadership distributed through a management team, network or organisation.
